Are We Reconsidering Church Denominations?

Are we supposed to accept the idea that the Church is to be denominated? Did Jesus intend for His Church to be one and yet divided (John 17:21)? The existence of denominations brings many questions to mind. Was the original intent supposed to be one Church with one Head united in Apostolic teaching (Acts 2:41-42, Eph. 1:22-23, 2:19-20, 3:3-5, 4:4)? What constitutes a group of believers as a denomination? What was Church unity like among the first Christians?
