Respectable Sins

Confronting the Sins We Tolerate

NavPress

By Jerry Bridges

This book is excellent to use to dig into those corners of your life that you have left untouched by Holy Scripture and the Holy Spirit. Jerry Bridges has given us in this book some thoughts to ponder about how deep our seeking of holiness really goes. I would highly recommend this book for any Christian wishing to live more obedient to the Word and their Lord Jesus Christ.

In Two Minds

By Os Guinness

InterVarsity Press

A great book on the issue of doubt in the life of the Believer. If you're wrestling with doubts this would be a great book to discover how to deal with it and how God works us through doubting our faith.

The Knowledge of the Holy

HarperSanFrancisco/HarperCollins Publishers

By A. W. Tozer

This is one of the best books I’ve read on holiness. It will cause you to ponder God’s holiness to the deepest depths. It is truly an inspiring classic on the nature of God. This book shows how Christians can rejuvenate their prayer life, meditate more reverently, understand God more deeply, and experience God’s presence their lives. It shows new ways to experience and understand the wonder and the power of God’s Spirit in our daily lives.

A. W. Tozer (1897-1963) was a popular evangelical author. The author of thirty books, he has been called one of the most influential American evangelists of the twentieth century.

The Christian’s Secret of a Happy Life
Bridge-Logos Publishers
By Hannah Whitall Smith

This is an amazing book that covers numerous aspects of the Christian life. The author invades the most intimate details of your life as a servant of God and helps you analyze how you are growing and living in Christ. Strong encouragements are given to seek to live according to God’s Word and with the direction of the Holy Spirit. Very practical and a must read for any believer. Over 125 years ago Hannah Whitall Smith realized the need to encourage the believer and wrote this book that has blossomed into a Christian classic. This book could serve as a personal devotional book or a group Bible study guide. Highly recommended.

Hannah Whitall Smith was the wife of Robert Smith who owned a small newspaper called The Christian’s Pathway to Power. Mr. Smith’s ministry increased and he had trouble filling his newspaper with articles so he asked his wife to write for it. She reluctantly agreed. When her articles became even more popular than those that Mr. Smith had written, he asked her to write more. She reluctantly agreed again. Soon a publisher asked her to collate the articles into a book and it was published in 1875 and became a huge success both in America and England. Over the last hundred years it has become a Christian classic and has sold into the millions. Regarding her writing she stated, “Regardless of how we feel, be faithful and do what is right, and God will do the rest.”

The Jesus I Never Knew
Zondervan Publishing House
By Philip Yancey

Mr. Yancey is one of my favorite authors and he has proven why again by writing this book. It is a fresh look at the person we know as Jesus Christ, our personal Savior. Mr. Yancey covers the life and character of Jesus in a most amazing way. He helps us look deep into the purposes, plans, actions and behavior of Jesus and pushes us to examine how we view our Lord. He brings creative insight into the person and work of Jesus as He ministered to those around Him. Mr. Yancey will cause you to question your perceptions of Christ in a positive way and this will lead you into a deeper relationship with Jesus.

Philip Yancey serves as editor-at-large for Christianity Today Magazine. He has written six Gold Medallion Award-winning books, including Where is God When It Hurts?, Disappointment with God, and The Gift Nobody Wants. Yancey has co-edited The Student Bible, which also won a Gold Medallion.

The Screwtape Letters
Macmillan Publishing Co.,Inc.
By C. S. Lewis

This is one of my favorite books by C. S. Lewis and a true classic. It has been said that this book is the wittiest piece of writing the 20th century has produced to provoke man to godliness. The Screwtape Letters gradually unfolds as a series of explicit directives and plans through which Wormwood may subvert and twist human strivings toward love, charity and wisdom, manipulating the human soul to his own diabolical ends. Fascinating in its cunning and incredibly acute awareness of the flaws and foibles of man, this small masterpiece has been read by millions since C. S. Lewis wrote the first letter for a newspaper during World War II.

C. S. Lewis was a professor of medieval and renaissance literature at Cambridge University until his death in 1963. He was the author of many popular books for children, as well as works of adult fiction and books on religion. These include The Chronicles of Narnia, The Great Divorce, Mere Christianity, Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra and The Problem of Pain.

My Heart – Christ’s Home
Intervarsity Press

By Robert Boyd  Munger

This is one of my favorite small pamphlets to share with both those seeking Christ and those that claim Him as their Savior. It compares a person’s life to that of a home where the various rooms represent the complexities of our soul and thought life. It challenges the reader to consider how open they are to Christ’s influence in their life and how much they have committed to be submissive to His Lordship. It is a must-read for any believer.

Robert Boy Munger (1910-2001) served numerous pastorates and as professor of evangelism and church strategy at Fuller Theological Seminary.

Flirting with the World
A Challenge to Loyalty
Harold Shaw Publishers

By John White

In this penetrating book, John White exposes the unmistakable proof that most Christians are not only in but of the world. Incisively he “unmasks the church’s massive accommodation to the world.” White shows how, in leaning over backward to make the gospel appealing, we have let the world into the church, adopting attitudes and priorities that demonstrate our divided loyalty. Dr. White does more than condemn our compulsive involvement with the world; he outlines workable solutions that can set us free from its trap, calling us to a radical repentance that will not only restore the church to her first love but will make people of the world stop, take notice, and turn to the living God.

Basic Christianity
Intervarsity Press
By John R. W. Stott

Examine with John R.W. Stott, rector of All Souls Church, London, the historical facts on which Christianity stands. Who is Jesus Christ? What on earth did He do? What made Him do it? What good did it all do? An excellent book that covers the basic beliefs of Christianity.

Baptism & Fullness
The Work of the Holy Spirit Today
Intervarsity Press

By John R. W. Stott

John R. W. Stott covers in a clear and searching study the experience of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life. He does this centered on a biblical foundation and balanced manner. He also includes sections on the fruit and the gifts of the Spirit as well. A great book from a great author and dedicated believer.

Why I Am A Christian
Intervarsity Press

By John R. W. Stott

John R. W. Stott in this book provides a compelling, persuasive case for considering the Christian faith. If we take an honest look at Jesus, we will discover that following Him gives us the purpose, identity and freedom we’ve been searching for, and far more than we had ever imagined. A great gift book for a Christian or non-Christian friend.
