Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane.

This painting was painted by Heinrich Hofmann in 1890.

It depicts the spiritual ordeal that Jesus was experiencing in His last moments before being arrested, tried and condemned to death on the cross. It captures the moment when Jesus prays to His Father in Heaven regarding what He knows He must endure to save mankind from their sins. Scriptural references concerning this event can be found in Matthew 6:36-46, Mark 14:32-42 and Luke 22:39-46

Significant things to notice in the painting are the dark ominous clouds. Jerusalem can be seen in the background. In the shadows the disciples are sleeping. In the foreground there is a small thorny bush possibly similar to the one that Jesus’ crown of thorns would be made of. There is a shaft of light depicting God’s favor and anointing on Jesus. The face of Jesus is pleasant and serene as He speaks with His Heavenly Father. He is wearing a robe of purple signifying royalty. His hands are clasped in an interlocking fashion demonstrating His dedication and tenacity for concentrating on prayer. He is kneeling on a hard stone ledge.
