Continual Worship

By Michael K. Farrar, O.D.

Have you ever wondered what worship in heaven will be like? We are given a glimpse of the continual worship that takes place in heaven in the fourth chapter of the Book of Revelation. Here we are given the account of heavenly worship as witnessed by the apostle John. What John describes must have been overwhelming to all of his senses.

Visually there were flashes of lightning around the throne of God. The thundering noise described must have been deafening. To stand where John stood, to see and hear what he witnessed, must have been extremely humbling.

Numerous strange and magnificent creatures were present. The creatures were continually saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come." The twenty-four elders who surround the throne were saying, “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being."

We can learn several things from this account. First, our lives should be filled with continual worship of God. Worship is a lifestyle that includes both our work and play. It should permeate all our relationships and our actions. Worship is not just a service on Sunday morning. Worship involves acknowledging God continually through the day.

We also learn that to worship God is to declare His holiness and to proclaim His authority over creation. God is holy and pure, righteous and just, loving and merciful. God is worthy of worship not only because He is holy, but also because all of creation came into being by His will.

Does your life reflect the model of worship seen in Revelation Chapter Four? The worship we practice here on earth prepares us for the worship we will offer God in heaven. Practice makes perfect!
